Sleep Apnea

So you snore at night and wake up a little tired in the morning, it's not a big deal (except to your sleeping partner), right? Maybe not, but if the cause of your fatigue is snoring, then you could be at risk for serious, life-shortening consequences. How dangerous is sleep apnea? What kind of sleep apnea causes the most significant health risks? How can your Cohasset dentist help?

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that causes breathing to be briefly and repeatedly interrupted during sleep. There are several types of sleep apnea, but the most common (and dangerous) is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) when the airway passage becomes blocked or collapsed.

Your bedmate may notice that you gasp, choke, or snore loudly during the night. Although these breathing pauses last for only a few seconds, your sleep is continuously interrupted and your body experiences lower than normal oxygen levels. Your brain is waking you up because it needs oxygen!

How dangerous is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is not usually a direct cause of death but can affect your overall health and lead to life-threatening conditions. Read our educational infographic to find out the consequences of Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
